elissa from little miss cards has the coolest story about how she came to be a stationery designer. in her own words:
When I started Little Miss Cards, I was pregnant, soon to be a single mom and going to be out of work after my maternity leave. I was scared. I couldn't work, so I was living off the small income I made as a janitor from my church, the love of my family and my savings account which was slowly dwindling. Since I didn't really have any money for Christmas gifts that year, I made them. Along with those gifts were handmade Christmas cards. My sister received hers in the mail and called me to thank me and tell me how beautiful it was. She also said, "You could sell these!" A little lightbulb went off in my head. I did some research, bought The Handmade Marketplace and came up with a name based off of one my daughter's nicknames, "Little Miss." Ironically, about a month into this venture I remembered I use to make birthday cards and as favors I had made invitations for friends parties. I guess I've always been in the card business!
What makes my cards special and unique is that my cards are truly handmade. Unlike other stationery shops with similar items, I cut, fold, stamp and emboss every card by hand. No machines here, no expensive pre-folded cards sold here, just a person putting love into each card and then sending it your way.
that's so inspiring! thanks for sharing, elissa. and, as a bonus, little miss cards is donating 50% of all september sales to operation write home, an organization that collects and ships handmade cards to our soldiers overseas. place your order today and help the cause!
